Epic to Romance

The first written sources of the Western World are the Greek Homeric Epics. From then, literature developed quickly and diversified into numerous genres. This course tracks the development of literature from those earliest epics into the genre of Romance in the Hellenistic age. The sources that will be covered include: The Homeric Epics; The Hellenistic Epic; Apollonius and Ovid; Greek Romantic Novels and other Greek and Roman sources. We will also look at the theory behind the narrative techniques used and see how literature developed from Epic to Romance.

The course is delivered online in real time through our Zoom online classroom. Each class will last for one and a half hours. You will be provided with the necessary software to take part but will need a computer or tablet with a microphone and webcam.
