Lost Plays and Fragments

Athenian tragedy of the 5th century Athens is widely studied but only the three ‘main’ tragedians are looked at.  There were in fact many more than this, dozens more in fact, and they won far more times than the ‘big three’ did.  Their work may not be fully extant and some of it may be accessible only through comments in other sources, but there are thousands of fragments by which to judge them.

This unique course offers an opportunity to work with lost plays of Ancient Greece and their fragments.  The course runs for 10 weeks. In the first week you will be taught how to access, ‘read’, and classify tragic fragments. Weeks 2-7 look at a range of tragic authors and their fragments.  The last three weeks are used to reconstruct part, if not all, of a fragmented tragedy using outside sources, commentaries and other contemporary works.

Participants will need to read extracts from prescribed sources and do some limited research in preparation for the seminars.
