Homer's Iliad - ONLINE
Saturday 11th July 2020 2-5pm

This interactive seminar consists of a close reading of Homer’s Iliad. The plot, characters and meaning of the poem are examined in detail within the context of the Homeric world. The value of the poem as an historical document is also considered alongside the influence that it has had on literature through the middle ages and into modernity.

This three hour course is part of the series of Saturday Afternoon Seminars which take an in-depth look at the seminal works and concepts of the ancient world. Having taken part, you will have a thorough understanding of the poem, why it has been part of the literary canon and a subject of study since the 5th century BC, and the ability to use the text as primary source evidence in academic work at any level.

It is not necessary to have read the Iliad in full before attending the course, but it would be useful to have researched the plot and have an idea of who the main characters are. This information can be obtained from online encyclopaedia-style sources.
